Jarvis Christian University faculty and staff welcomed Dr. Mark Melton of Melton Consultants and Investments, LLC, to discuss successful grant writing tips Monday.
Some of the tips he recommended included encouraging Jarvis faculty to write their first grants with an experienced grant writer, as a co-principal investigator to learn about grant writing success. He also suggested faculty serve on proposal review panels to become proposal reviewers and get to know program directors and what they are looking for in successful grant proposals.
Reviewing grants that get funded and comparing a potential grant being written is another way to gain some insights into successful grant writing. Comparing funded grants with non-funded grants can demonstrate effective techniques. He also suggested faculty contact or visit an agency they are considering writing to for funding to get familiar with the agency.
Only about a quarter of grant proposals receive funding, so Melton encouraged the faculty and staff members to persevere.
