Welcome to the Office of Student Health & Wellness

The Office of Counseling and Health Services is committed to providing all students, faculty, and staff with high-quality, safe, confidential, and respectful counseling and health care. We are open to any comments and ideas that can assist us in improving the services we provide to you, the Jarvis community.  Counseling Services offices are located in the Peoples-Dixon Building/Room 26.

Our Health Services have been outsourced to Special Health Resources (SHR), available on campus Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the mobile health clinic. SHR will have two mobile health clinics on campus to provide preventative and billable services. For more information on Special Health Resources (SHR), please call 903-501-1747 and choose option 4 for Tyler. Should students, staff, or faculty have an emergency or need help after hours, they can also visit the local hospital.

Counseling Services

Your Mental Health Matters

Navigating university life can be challenging, and we're here to help you every step of the way. Our Counseling Services offer a safe, confidential space where you can talk about whatever is on your mind. Whether you're dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or just need someone to listen, our team of licensed professionals is here for you.

Services Offered:

  • Individual Counseling: One-on-one sessions focused on your personal concerns with the university's counselor or Special Health Resources counselors.
  • Group Counseling (by request): Share experiences and support with peers in a guided group setting.
  • Crisis Intervention: Immediate support for urgent mental health needs.
  • Workshops and Seminars: Learn new skills and strategies for managing stress, enhancing communication, and promoting overall wellbeing.
  • Teletherapy:  Virtual counseling services through Special Health Resources. 
  • Online Resources (coming soon): Access self-help tools, guided exercises, and information on a variety of mental health topics.

Health Services

Caring for Your Physical Wellbeing

Our Health Services team is dedicated to keeping you healthy so you can focus on your studies. We provide a range of medical services to address your physical health needs, from routine check-ups to managing chronic conditions.

Services Offered:

  • Primary Care: General health assessments, treatment for illnesses, and preventive care.
  • Telehealth: Virtual health services.
  • Medication Management Services
  • Women’s & Men's Health: Comprehensive gynecological care, including routine exams, contraception, and sexual health education.
  • Immunizations, Vaccinations, & Sports Physicals: Stay up to date on all required and recommended vaccines and/or physicals.
  • Social Determinants of Health Screenings
  • Referral Services: A provider will disseminate a referral to a high scope of practice based on clinical medical judgement. 
  • Health Education: Resources and programs to help you make informed decisions about your health and wellness.
  • Non-Billable Services:  Blood pressure checks, HIV Testing, Syphilis Testing, & Hepatitis C Testing. 

Appointments: Schedule an appointment online specialhealth.org or by calling our office at 903-501-1747. Also, we offer our Health and Wellness Clinic Mobile Unit in the front of the Student Center. We also offer walk-in hours for urgent care needs.

Emergency and After-Hours Care

24/7 Support When You Need It Most

For urgent health or mental health concerns outside of regular office hours, we have resources available to ensure you receive the care you need. Our emergency services include:

  • On-call Counselors: Available after hours for mental health emergencies.
  • Local Hospital/Clinic: For serious medical emergencies, Special Health Resources (SHR) in Longview, TX and UT Health North Campus in Tyler, TX are located minutes from campus. Also, another option is the Gregg County Health Department in Longview, Texas. 
  • Campus Safety: Our campus safety team is trained to assist in health emergencies and can help as well in need of an emergency.

Insurance and Fees

Affordable Care for All Students

We strive to make healthcare accessible and affordable for every student. Special Health Resources (SHR) can help you navigate any questions about coverage and costs with the Insurance Navigator tool. The Insurance Navigator will assist students with obtaining insurance services, if applicable. If you have any questions, please contact Special Health Resources (SHR) at 903-501-1747 and choose option 4 for Tyler.
