Community service/service learning program

MISSION

The mission of the Community Service/Service Learning Program is to prepare our students for active participation in our democratic society, helping them to develop understanding and talents for effective citizenship; understand the resources and needs of their local, national, and international communities; and engage with those communicates to enact positive change.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Jarvis Christian University (JCU) is committed to help strengthen the communities in which we work and live.  We encourage JCU students to become involved in their communities, lending their voluntary support to programs that enrich the quality of life and opportunties for all citizens.

Freshmen and Sophomore students are required to complete 60 hours of community service before graduation. Transfer students admitted with over 45 hours are required to complete 30 hours. Transfer student admitted with under 30 hours are required to complete 60 hours.

Note: Students admitted during Spring 2020 to Spring 2021 will only be required to complete 45 hours due to the pandemic.

SERVICE LEARNING

We coordinate and support opportunities for students to learn and serve with community partners throughout Wood, Upshur, and Smith Counties.  We seek to bring campus and communities together in partnership to share resources, meet real community needs, and help to educate our students to become the change agents of tomorrow.  Our goals are to:

  •  Assist area non-profit organizations, government agencies, and private industry and business in developing links with JCU students;
  • Enhance students' learning by enabling them to practice skills and test classroom knowledge through related service experiences, promoting out of class learning (experiential) experiences, internships and service learning for JCU students (locally, nationally, and internationally).
  • Assist faculty in their role as facilitators of service learning and in their engagement with the community by providing leadership training and development opportunties.
