Jarvis Christian University proudly announces that Maryam Eldesouky of Cairo, Egypt, will join JCU for the 2024-2025 academic year as a Fulbright Scholar, bringing a wealth of Arabic cultural knowledge and international expertise to the institution.

Eldesouky will teach an introductory foreign language course in Arabic.  Her appointment underscores the university's commitment to fostering international understanding and promoting linguistic diversity.

The Fulbright Program, known for its commitment to fostering mutual understanding between the United States and other countries, selected Eldesouky based on her outstanding academic achievements and commitment to cross-cultural exchange. This prestigious honor reflects her dedication to scholarship and contributions to language.

Eldesouky is a 2019 graduate of Port Said University with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature and linguistics, at the top of her class for four consecutive years.  She is enrolled in the master’s program in applied linguistics at Cairo University.

Eldesouky has taught English as an instructor to different ages, levels, and programs, using various teaching methods for E-planet Eqypt and Berlitz Egypt.  Since 2021, she has served in the English Department as a teaching assistant at Port Said University, working with professors and teachers as an academic advisor to students and assisting professors in teaching grammar, phonology, translation, and scholarly writing courses.  She is adept at translation, transcription, proofreading, and academic writing.

“We are honored to welcome Eldesouky to our academic community,” said JCU President Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt. “Her enthusiasm, expertise, and commitment to language education will greatly enrich our students’ learning experience and broaden their understanding of the Arab world.”

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through educational and cultural exchanges. Eldesouky’s arrival marks an important addition to this mission, enhancing the university’s role in global dialogue and cultural exchange.

Besides bringing a wealth of Arabic cultural knowledge and a global perspective to JCU, Eldesouky enjoys music, gaming, arts and crafts, swimming, travel, yoga, and reading.

During her year at JCU, she will teach undergraduate introductory courses in Arabic language and culture, developing new curriculum materials, and engaging in collaborative research projects.
