Jarvis Christian University's Criminal Justice Department will present ambitious new research at two upcoming, high-profile conferences in October on improving career readiness and writing preparation for the  Criminal Justice academic discipline relating to policing, corrections, and court

This pioneering research is spearheaded by JCU chair of Social and Behavioral Sciences/Department of Criminal Justice professor Dr. Melody Threadcraft, a scholar in the field of criminal justice who brings together a team of distinguished scholars from other institutions. The two-year, longitudinal study participants are Dr. Whitney T. Walker of Beakoni Center For Research and Innovation; Dr. Kashley Brown of Grambling State University; Dr. David Rembert of Prairie View A&M University; Nashabra Morgan, a recent JCU Master of Criminal Justice graduate; and TaShauna Sam, a current senior criminal justice student.

Their work aims to clarify current writing trends, presenting evidence-based strategies to address identified gaps in writing skills and techniques within the criminal justice academic discipline. This research should significantly contribute to the literature and provide valuable insights to academics, professionals, and students.

October 2-4, the research team will share their findings at the Southwestern Academy of Criminal Justice Conference, renowned for being a hub of thought leadership within the criminal justice field. The conference will offer a platform for the team to present their initial findings and contribute to the dialogue of preparing criminal justice majors to be career-ready upon graduation.

October 17-20, the team will present their research at the  HBCU Faculty Development Network in Houston, Texas. This conference gathers eminent scholars and professionals from Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the nation, providing an ideal platform for the team to share their research findings with a broader academic audience.

The team's research promises to have far-reaching implications, not only for the field of criminal justice but also for tertiary education, where the development of professional writing skills is of utmost importance.

“This groundbreaking research project is one of many ways that Jarvis Christian University is striving to promote academic excellence and contribute to societal advancement,” Threadcraft said. “As an institution, the university is dedicated to fostering a culture of investigation and intellectual curiosity, while equipping students with the practical skills they need to make a meaningful impact in their chosen fields.”

Jarvis provides a culturally rich educational environment where students are empowered to achieve their career goals through an inclusive and diverse academic experience that prepares them for a life of significance. Whether a student is a recent high school graduate or a working adult seeking career advancement, Jarvis Christian University develops all of its students intellectually, socially, spiritually, and personally.
