HAWKINS, TX — Jarvis Christian University will celebrate its tradition of academic excellence and student achievement at its annual Honors Convocation on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the historic Smith-Howard Chapel. This signature academic event recognizes and honors students who have excelled in their studies and leadership throughout the academic year.
The university is pleased to welcome Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr., President of Grambling State University, as the keynote speaker for this year’s convocation. A transformational leader and advocate for educational equity, Dr. Lemelle brings to the podium a powerful message of excellence, innovation, and purpose-driven leadership that resonates deeply with the mission of Jarvis Christian University.
“We are honored to have Dr. Lemelle join us as we celebrate the academic achievements of our students,” said Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt, President of Jarvis Christian University. “His leadership and commitment to the advancement of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) offer a compelling example for our students to emulate as they strive for excellence in their academic and professional journeys.”
Dr. Lemelle, a Louisiana native, was appointed the 11th president of Grambling State University in 2023. He previously served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Grambling and held senior leadership roles in both higher education and the private sector. Known for his strategic approach to institutional transformation and student-centered vision, he has been a vocal champion of HBCUs as engines of innovation, economic mobility, and social justice.
During the Honors Convocation, students will be recognized for their academic distinction, including those named to the President’s List, Dean’s List, and recipients of departmental and university-wide awards. The program also celebrates student leaders who have demonstrated outstanding service, character, and commitment to the values of the university.
Honors Convocation is a cherished tradition at Jarvis Christian University that underscores the institution’s mission to prepare a diverse population of lifelong learners—intellectually, socially, spiritually, and personally. The ceremony serves as a meaningful reminder of the transformative power of education and the importance of recognizing student achievement.
“Our students have demonstrated incredible perseverance and excellence throughout this academic year,” said Dr. Regina S. Robinson, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Honors Convocation is an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and to encourage them to continue striving for greatness. Having Dr. Lemelle join us this year will make the event even more memorable and impactful.”
The entire Jarvis Christian University community—including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the public—is invited to attend. A livestream option will also be made available for those unable to attend in person.
