Jarvis Christian University junior biology major Grace Gonzalez, 19, of Pearland, Texas, has been named a Barbara C. Jordan Honors Scholar, which recognizes academic excellence and civic leadership among outstanding students.

Named in honor of the late trailblazing American politician, civil rights leader and educator Barbara C. Jordan, the program seeks to honor Jordan’s legacy by empowering students who demonstrate a commitment to scholarship, community service, and social justice.

Gonzalez says her career dream is to one day work in wildlife rehabilitation, due to her love of animals.

“I love the idea of taking injured animals and getting them health to release into the wild again,” she said. “I have a love for all kinds of animals. I have had lots of animals myself, including hampsters, rabbits, dogs, cats and even fish.”

A first-generation college student, Gonzalez said she was always the one taking care of her family’s pets: feeding, watering, and playing them.

“A lot of animal-centered careers start with a biology degree,” she said.  She plans to continue schooling to earn her master’s in biology after leaving Jarvis.

Besides being an honors student, Gonzalez is also a student-athlete on the Jarvis softball team.  Softball is how she discovered Jarvis. She said the coach from Jarvis watched her play in high school and gave her the best offer, which brought her here to Hawkins, Texas.  She plans to graduate May 2025.

Barbara C. Jordan Honor Scholars receive exclusive scholarship opportunities to support their academic pursuits including

  • Graduating as an Honors Program Scholar
  • Special consideration for scholarships, internships, and research opportunities
  • Special cultural and travel opportunities
  • Membership in the Honors Students’ Organization

The program provides unique leadership development opportunities, workshops, and mentorship to help students grow as future leaders in their communities and beyond. Students have the chance to connect with like-minded peers, faculty members, and professionals who share a passion for social justice and positive change.
