Jarvis Christian University proudly announces that Shukuru Lucas Cosmas of Tanzania will join JCU for the 2024-2025 academic year as a Fulbright Scholar, bringing a wealth of knowledge and international expertise to the institution. Cosmas will teach an introductory foreign language course in Swahili. He arrives July 25, 2024.

The Fulbright Program, known for its commitment to fostering mutual understanding between the United States and other countries, selected Cosmas based on his outstanding academic achievements and commitment to cross-cultural exchange. This prestigious honor reflects his dedication to scholarship and his contributions to language.

Cosmas is a graduate of the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts with Education degree, majoring in Kiswahili and Literature. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, he engaged in learning programs relating to composition of literary works, using language creatively to arouse his audience through composing poems and plays.

His interest in cultural sharing and global learning paved the way for him to attend several seminars and workshops relating to language, events such as Swahili World Day and Poetry World Day. Prior to his Fulbright Scholar acceptance, he was working as a Swahili and literature teacher at Ilemela secondary school, in Tanzania. He enjoys learning language acquisition principles, guiding and nurturing students’ attitudes towards learning and fulfilling their dreams.

“We are delighted to welcome our new Fulbright Scholar Shukuru Cosmas to Jarvis Christian University," said JCU President Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt.  “Jarvis believes in the benefits of the Fulbright Scholars Program for the cultural and educational exchanges it brings to East Texas. This program underscores the university's commitment to academic excellence and global engagement. He will undoubtedly enrich our campus community with his unique perspective and scholarly contributions.”

The Fulbright Program, established in 1946 under legislation introduced by Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, is America's flagship international educational exchange program. Each year, the program sponsors scholars, students, and professionals to study, teach, and conduct research abroad, while also welcoming scholars from other countries to the United States.

Jarvis Christian University provides a culturally rich environment where students are empowered to achieve their career goals through an inclusive and diverse academic experience that prepares them for a life of significance. Whether a student is a recent high school graduate or a working adult seeking career advancement, JCU develops all of its students intellectually, socially, spiritually, and emotionally.
