(Hawkins, Texas) —Jarvis Christian College is hosting a Black History Month chapel service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, featuring Dr. David Pilgrim, founder and director of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia, located at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. The museum is the nation’s largest publicly accessible collection of 20,000 artifacts of intolerance. A leading expert on diversity, equity and race relations, Dr. Pilgrim is an applied sociologist who uses objects of intolerance to teach tolerance and challenge others to learn about and talk about diversity and race relations in meaningful ways, then do something positive to promote a more just society.

A 1980 graduate of Jarvis Christian College, Dr. Pilgrim earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from The Ohio State University, where his doctoral dissertation dealt with racial segregation in higher education. Dr. Pilgrim is the author of “Understanding Jim Crow (2015), “Watermelons, Nooses, and Straight Razors (2017), and, with Franklin Hughes, “Haste to Rise” (2020).

CNN, National Public Radio, the British Broadcasting Corporation, and print publications such as Time magazine, the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times have all sought his expertise on diversity, inclusion, equity and race relations. Dr. Pilgrim is the Ferris State University vice president for diversity, inclusion and strategic initiatives and a tenured professor of sociology.
