Texas’ nonprofit private colleges and universities, including Jarvis Christian University, are a major force in the state’s economy, contributing a total of $17.2 billion according to the 2024 Economic Impact Report from ICUT.
The report notes $7.59 billion in direct spending from institutions, employees, students, and visitors, and an additional $7.32 billion in indirect and induced spending, driven by increased demand in local economies. With 41 member institutions statewide, this economic power underscores the significance of the independent sector in Texas higher education.
University-related purchasing totaled $1.75 billion, while students and employees contributed $1.90 billion and $2.66 billion respectively. Meanwhile, $455 million in visitor spending and $828 million in capital expenditures show that institutions like Jarvis also enhance tourism and infrastructure.
Perhaps most significantly, ICUT member alumni generated $2.26 billion in additional economic output. 72% of alumni remained in Texas, strengthening communities across the state and helping local economies thrive.
With over 120,000 Texas jobs supported by ICUT institutions, this report confirms what many already know: higher education is a key pillar of Texas’ economic development.
