Jarvis Christian University Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
HAWKINS, Texas — Jarvis Christian University joins communities across the nation in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed September 15 through October 15, recognizing the histories, cultures, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
This annual observance provides an opportunity to celebrate the diverse voices, traditions, and experiences that have helped shape communities across the United States. For Jarvis Christian University, Hispanic Heritage Month also reflects the University’s commitment to cultivating a campus community where students encounter cultures and perspectives that broaden their understanding of the world.
Throughout its history, Jarvis has remained committed to providing students with a transformative education grounded in academic excellence, service, leadership, and opportunity. As the University celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, the Jarvis community recognizes the importance of learning from the experiences and contributions of people from diverse backgrounds.
“Diversas voces. Más posibilidades.” — Diverse voices. More possibilities. — captures the spirit of this year’s celebration at Jarvis. The phrase recognizes that a strong educational community is enriched when different histories, cultures, experiences, and perspectives are represented and valued.
As part of the University’s observance, Jarvis Christian University will host a special Hispanic Heritage Month Chapel on Tuesday, September 22, at 11 a.m. The service will provide an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and members of the University community to come together in recognition and celebration of Hispanic heritage and culture.
The chapel observance reflects Jarvis Christian University’s longstanding understanding of education as extending beyond the classroom. Through campus programs, cultural observances, worship experiences, and community engagement, students are encouraged to develop a deeper appreciation for the people and communities around them.
Hispanic Heritage Month traces its national observance to Hispanic Heritage Week, established in 1968, before being expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988. The September 15 starting date coincides with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile commemorating their independence shortly thereafter.
Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, the Jarvis community is encouraged to learn more about the histories and experiences of Hispanic and Latino communities and to recognize their contributions to education, business, faith, public service, science, the arts, and countless other areas of American life.
