HAWKINS, TX — Thunderous applause, electrifying rhythms, and a packed E.W. Rand Gymnasium marked the triumphant return of the Jarvis Christian University Homecoming Step Show on Saturday, March 22, 2025. After a seven-year hiatus, the highly anticipated event brought out spirited performances and fierce competition from campus fraternities and sororities, reigniting a beloved tradition during Homecoming Weekend.
Taking first place honors in the competition was Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, whose flawless execution, powerful symbolism, and crowd-pleasing choreography wowed both judges and spectators. Their performance paid homage to Black Greek unity, academic excellence, and the resilience of sisterhood—earning them the top spot on the podium.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated secured second place, delivering a high-energy routine filled with precision and flair. Their performance highlighted brotherhood, tradition, and campus pride, leaving the crowd roaring with enthusiasm.
Rounding out the winners, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated claimed third place, captivating the audience with a dynamic presentation that showcased creativity, unity, and step mastery.
The show marked the university’s first official step show since 2018, and its return was nothing short of spectacular.
Much of the success of this year’s event can be credited to Charles Smith, Division of Student Affairs Coordinator of Student Life, who served as the primary organizer and visionary behind the production. From planning and promotion to execution and stage management, Smith’s tireless efforts brought this show to life and set a new standard for excellence in campus events.
“Bringing the step show back was a top priority for Student Life this year,” said Smith. “We wanted to give students and alumni a chance to celebrate our Greek culture and rich tradition of performance and unity. The energy in the building was electric, and the students truly delivered.”
Hosted by JCU alumnus Corn Dawson and featuring sounds by fellow alum DJ Tay, the step show had all the elements of a true cultural celebration. Each organization brought its unique style and message to the stage, reaffirming the relevance and impact of historically Black fraternities and sororities on campus.
The audience included students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members, many of whom praised the production for its energy, organization, and talent. The return of the step show was part of a larger effort to revitalize campus traditions and strengthen student engagement during Homecoming Weekend.
“Seeing the gym packed, students stepping with passion, and alumni cheering them on was a powerful reminder of what Jarvis is all about,” said Dr. Kishia James, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs. “This was more than a performance—it was a celebration of culture, pride, and the enduring spirit of our students.”
With its overwhelming success, the 2025 Homecoming Step Show is poised to become a staple of future celebrations. Plans are already underway for next year’s event, and expectations are higher than ever.
