Jarvis Christian University Chair of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Criminal Justice Department Dr. Melody Threadcraft recently trained to administer Grow With Google Career Certificates via the online learning platform Coursera.

Google Career Certificates are available in Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Digital Marketing and E-Commerce, IT Support, Project Management, and User Experience (UX) Design. The certificates do not require a degree or experience and can be completed online within 3-6 months of part-time study. The program includes an employer consortium of over 150 companies, including Walmart, Verizon, and Google, all committed to considering graduates for relevant entry-level roles.

Nearly two-thirds of all new jobs created since 2010 require either high- or medium-level digital skills, but 1 in 3 American workers have limited or no digital skills. To help bridge that gap, Grow with Google created Google Career Certificates which launched in 2018 to support developing skills for in-demand career fields.

Grow With Google has awarded JCU 50 scholarships and courses began this week and be taken throughout the year.  Interested scholarship applications can be found on the Jarvis Christian University Adult and Continuing Education website platform, managed by Dr. Dorothy Langley.

“Empowering individuals with the skills they need to succeed is at the heart of what we do at Jarvis Christian University,” said Dr. Melody Threadcraft, Chair of the Social & Behavioral Sciences Department, who recently trained  to administer the courses at Jarvis. “Through our Career Certificates program, we’re providing training and connecting learners with employers actively seeking talent in these crucial areas.”

Over a half million people globally have graduated from the program with 20,000 in the United States. As many as 75% have reported a positive career impact, including a new job, higher pay, or promotion within six months of completion.  55% of U.S. graduates identify as Asian, Black or Latino. 35% of U.S. Certificate graduates come from low-income areas in the country earning under $30,000 per year and upskilling to fields with $76,000 media incomes.

Grow with Google Career Certificates program aims to equip individuals in the workforce with the skills they need to thrive in today’s digital job market.

With the ongoing shift toward a more digital economy, these certificate programs offer a pathway for employees from all backgrounds to enhance their skill sets and improve their employability. Industry experts design each course and provide hands-on learning experiences, enabling participants to build a work portfolio showcasing their abilities.

Designed for beginners, these programs require no prior experience. The courses are offered online at a flexible pace. Graduates of the certificate program receive access to resources from a network of employers looking for qualified candidates. Financial aid is available.
