Jarvis Christian University (JCU) students created handmade valentines for elderly veterans living in the Watkins-Logan Veterans Home and to senior citizens in the Hawkins Gardens Assisted Living Center during the first two weeks of February.
On Valentine’s Day, February 14, more than a dozen Jarvis students visited the locations, going room to room with staff to visit residents and share their handmade valentines. Five students this year were freshmen who previously had not been active in the club.
“This was a new and great experience for many of the students,” said Linda Hernandez-Meeks “They were touched by the outreach. Our students met two American veterans who were 102 and 103 years old and still active.” Meeks is the coordinator for Diversity Programs and oversees the Multicultural Student Organization, Circle K International, and the Pre-Alumni Organization, all of which participated in making valentines.
2024 was the third year for Jarvis student to make and deliver valentines to the residents. Photographs with residents at the delivery locations were not allowed due to respecting residents’ privacy, however the students did take group photos at each of the locations and of their creative, valentine-making sessions.
