HAWKINS, TX — Jarvis Christian University welcomed students, faculty, alumni, and local residents to its annual MLK Unity in the Community Celebration, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through music, reflection, and community service. The event, held in the historic Smith-Howard Chapel, emphasized this year’s theme: “Unity in the Community.”

The program featured a keynote address by Cody Mize, Superintendent of Mineola Independent School District, who inspired the audience with a heartfelt message on leadership, justice, and unity. Drawing on both personal experience and the enduring legacy of Dr. King, Mize challenged attendees to become agents of positive change in their schools, neighborhoods, and daily lives.

“Dr. King’s dream was not just about hope—it was about action,” Mize said. “It’s about showing up for others, listening with empathy, and leading with integrity. Whether in education, government, or your own home, we all have a role in building stronger communities.”

Mize’s message deeply resonated with the audience, particularly as he emphasized the role of education in creating opportunity and advancing equity—principles that align closely with the mission of Jarvis Christian University.

University President Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt opened the program with words of welcome and reflection. “This day reminds us of the power of unity and the strength of a community that chooses love over division,” she said. “Dr. King’s legacy lives on in the work we do at Jarvis—through service, learning, and lifting up the next generation of leaders.”

The program featured performances by the Jarvis Christian University Choir, who offered a stirring rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” known as the Black national anthem. Students also shared spoken word poetry and personal reflections that highlighted the continuing relevance of Dr. King's message.

Following the celebration, attendees participated in a community outreach service project, assembling care kits for local seniors and low-income families. The initiative was led by volunteers from the university’s Student Government Association and Campus Ministry, continuing Jarvis’s long tradition of faith-based service and community impact.

“Dr. King taught us that greatness is found in service,” said Gwen Winters, Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Development. “We’re proud to carry forward that legacy by giving back in tangible ways to the communities that surround and support our university.”

The event also drew participation from local clergy, elected officials, school leaders, and residents from Hawkins and neighboring towns, reflecting Jarvis Christian University’s strong ties to the East Texas region and its ongoing mission to foster meaningful partnerships beyond the campus gates.

The MLK Unity in the Community Celebration serves as a cornerstone of the university’s annual calendar, anchoring its commitment to social justice, inclusive leadership, and spiritual growth. Jarvis Christian University continues to honor Dr. King’s vision not just with words, but with action.
