HAWKINS, TX – March 26, 2025 – The Jarvis Christian University Choir will minister in music during worship at First Christian Church in Longview, Texas, on Sunday, March 30, at 10:30 a.m. The special service, open to the public, will take place at the church’s sanctuary located at 720 N. Sixth Street.
As part of its continued commitment to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and its congregations across the Southwest Region, Jarvis Christian University’s Concert Choir regularly partners with local churches to support worship through powerful musical presentations. This visit to First Christian Church - Longview is part of a broader initiative to deepen the university’s engagement with its founding denomination and strengthen bonds between the institution and the church community.
Known for their stirring renditions of gospel, spirituals, and sacred choral music, the JCU Choir brings a rich and reverent energy to every worship service. Under the direction of the university’s music faculty, the choir is comprised of talented student vocalists who not only represent the university with excellence but also share their gifts to inspire and uplift congregations throughout the region.
“We are always excited when the Jarvis Christian University Choir leads us in worship,” said a First Christian Church representative. “Their voices and presence are a blessing, and their commitment to ministry through music reminds us of the strength of our connection to Jarvis.”
Jarvis Christian University, a proud Historically Black College and University (HBCU), was founded in 1912 by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and continues to embrace its founding mission: to educate, inspire, and empower students for lives of leadership and service. Supporting Disciples congregations through spiritual engagement is a vital part of that mission.
“This partnership is about more than music—it’s about ministry,” said Dr. Glenell M. Lee-Pruitt, President of Jarvis Christian University. “Our students grow in their faith and leadership through experiences like this. By supporting Disciples of Christ congregations, we not only honor our historical roots—we also help shape a future where education and faith walk hand in hand.”
The service on March 30 promises to be a joyful celebration of worship, featuring both congregational participation and special music from the choir. Church leaders and university representatives encourage members of the community to attend and to bring a friend for this special experience.
The event also serves as a reminder of Jarvis’s commitment to community outreach, spiritual formation, and service in alignment with its faith-based identity.
